In short
  • Launched in 2007 — India won the inaugural edition vs Pakistan in Johannesburg.
  • The 2024 edition expanded to 20 teams: 4 groups of 5 → Super 8 (two groups of 4) → semis → final.
  • India ended an 11-year ICC trophy drought in 2024, beating South Africa in Barbados.
  • Held every 2 years (with occasional gaps). The 2026 edition will be co-hosted by India and Sri Lanka.

The 20-team format (2024 onward)

The expanded format splits 20 teams into 4 groups of 5. Each team plays 4 group-stage matches; the top 2 from each group (8 teams) advance to the Super 8 stage.

The Super 8 is two groups of 4 — round-robin — and the top 2 from each Super 8 group reach the semi-finals. One final decides it.

Qualification & the Associate pathway

The hosts and the top finishers from the previous edition qualify automatically. The rest come through regional qualifiers — Africa, Asia, Americas, EAP, Europe — giving Associates like Nepal, USA, Uganda, PNG and Oman regular World Cup exposure.

The USA's co-hosting of 2024 (with the West Indies) and their group-stage win over Pakistan was the format's biggest expansion moment.

Why T20 World Cups matter

The shortest format suits upsets — a single 20-over game can flip on one over. That's made the T20 WC the most unpredictable ICC trophy: Sri Lanka (2014), West Indies (twice), England (twice), and India have all lifted it.

It's also the tournament where T-shirts and TikTok clips travel further than the cricket itself — moments like Carlos Brathwaite's four sixes in the 2016 final have outlived the scorecard.
