Why the ball swings
Cricket ball swing is a boundary-layer effect. Air flows around the ball; on one side (the smooth, polished side) it stays laminar, while on the seamed or roughened side it becomes turbulent. Turbulent air stays attached longer, creating an asymmetric pressure — and the ball veers towards the rough side.
Humid, overcast conditions are famous for helping swing. The exact mechanism is still debated: theories include higher air density, softer leather that holds shine better, and small-scale effects on the ball's surface roughness. Every fast bowler will tell you the ball moves more when it's grey overhead.
Seam vs swing — different things
Swing happens in the air; seam happens off the pitch. If a delivery lands on its raised leather seam and the surface is even slightly grassy or moist, the ball can deviate several degrees off the straight line.
A 'green' pitch — freshly grown, moist beneath — is a seam bowler's dream. A dry, cracked pitch offers almost none.
Reverse swing
As the ball ages (roughly 40+ overs old), the two sides diverge extremely — one polished, one abraded. At speeds above 130 km/h and with a well-preserved shiny side, the ball begins to swing TOWARDS the shiny side — the opposite of conventional swing. Wasim Akram and Waqar Younis turned this into an art form in the 1990s.
Dew — the night-match variable
Once the sun sets and humidity rises, dew forms on the outfield and the ball. A wet ball is harder for bowlers to grip, especially spinners. It also skids on faster off the pitch, making batting easier.
That's why in most day-night limited-overs matches, captains winning the toss choose to BOWL — they'd rather set a target and then chase it with a wet, skidding ball under lights.
Why spin needs dry pitches
Spin bowlers rely on the ball gripping the surface as it lands, so it can pivot. A moist pitch skids; a dry, worn pitch grips.
Sub-continental pitches — Chennai, Colombo, Karachi — bake under the sun, crack, and start to turn sharply from day three of a Test onwards. That's why sides visiting India historically struggle.
Wind, altitude and other extras
Wind can help or hurt swing depending on direction — bowlers often prefer running in with the wind at their back so they can generate air speed. High-altitude venues (Johannesburg, Dharamsala) offer less air resistance, so the ball flies further and swing is reduced.
